​Sample Itinerary (Aomori)

Active Travel Japan will customize the itinerary based on your desired location, interests and physical level. Tours can be planned all over Japan. Group sizes are a minimum of 4 and maximum of 10.

Day 1 Arrival

  • Arrival at Narita International Airport

  • Transfer to Shin-Aomori Station (4 hrs)

  • Visit Aomori's Nebuta Museum

  • Dinner in local restaurant

Day 2 Apple Picking & Maple Leaves

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • Transfer to Kuroishi Apple Farm (1 hr)

  • Apple picking experience and tour with 6 varieties of apples

  • Visit Nakano Momiji (maple) mountain for short walk and fall colors viewing (depending on the season)

  • Lunch in local restaurant

  • Check into accommodation early

Day 3 The Hakkoda Mountains

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • Transfer to Nijinoko Lake for short walk in Suijin no Mori

  • Transfer to Hakkoda Mountains (30 min) and take the Hakkoda Ropeway

  • Lunch at summit station

  • 45 Minute summit nature trail loop

  • Visit Jogakura Bridge

  • Transfer to Yachi Onsen (30 min)

Day 4 The Oirase Gorge

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • Transfer to the beautiful Oirase Gorge (30 min)

  • 1-2 hour walk through the gorge with various waterfalls and bridges along the way

  • Moss ball making

  • Lunch in local restaurant

  • Drive around Lake Towada with stops along the way (1 hr)

  • Transfer to Aoni Onsen (1 hr)

Day 5 Craft Day

  • Delve into Aomori's unique cultural food scene starting with Kokeshi Doll making workshop and museum

Day 6​ Tsurunomaibashi, Mt. Iwaki & Art Museum

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • Transfer to Tsurunomaibashi bridge (1 hr) for a short walk around Mawarizekitame Pond.

  • ​Scenic drive up Mt. Iwaki

  • Lunch in local restaurant

  • Transfer to the Aomori Museum of Art

  • Transfer to accommodation

Day 7​ Hirosaki

  • Nokke-Don breakfast at Aomori City seafood market

  • Transfer to Hirosaki (1 hr) and visit Hirosaki Castle

  • Chrysanthemum & Fall Foliage Festival (depending on the season)

  • Apple pie in quaint cafe

  • Lunch in local restaurant

  • Bunaco bowl making experience

  • Dinner in Hirosaki

Day 8 The Shimokita Peninsula

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • ​Transfer to Osorezan Temple (2.5 hrs)

  • Temple Tour and short walk around the volcanic steam vents and lake

  • Transfer to Oma (1 hr) the Northernmost point of Honshu for a tuna sashimi bowl lunch

  • Boat tour and walk around the Hokokegaura rock formations

  • Transfer to hotel (40 min) and dinner

Day 9 Tohoku Emotion

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • Transfer to Hachinohe (2 hrs) down the Pacific coast of Aomori

  • Ride the Tohoku Emotion train down the coast 2 hours to Kuji in Iwate Prefecture

  • Enjoy lunch prepared in the train's open kitchen

  • Transfer to Tsuta Onsen (2.5 hrs)

Day 10 Sayonara

  • Breakfast at the accommodation

  • 1 hour round trip walk to beautiful Tsutanuma Pond

Attire & Equipment

  • Clothing – Pack for the appropriate number of days

  • Waterproof pants

  • T-shirts and long-sleeve T-shirts for layers

  • Water bottle

  • Day pack/backpack

  • Warm hat

  • Hiking pants and shorts for walking

  • Thick socks

  • A windbreaker or waterproof jacket in case of rain

  • Shoes – Good hiking shoes that have been worn in. Please wear your shoes before bringing them on a trip

  • Poles – You will want hiking poles as some sections of the train have uneven footing or steep ascent/descents

  • Protection from the Sun – Hat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, etc.

Additional Items

  • Passport – Please make sure it does not expire within 6 months of our trip and that you have at least one blank page

  • We also recommend bringing a photocopy of your passport in case the original is lost or stolen

  • Credit Card – Many businesses in Japan will accept major credit cards (although there may be an international transaction fee)

  • Cash – For the places that don’t, we recommend bringing at least $200 ~ $300 per person.

  • Debit Card – Along with your PIN number for cash withdrawals in case you run out

  • Important Documents – We recommend having a copy of your passport, travel insurance, and medical insurance policies

  • Camera – Don’t forget your charger or extra batteries

  • Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, nail clippers, and whatever else you need!

  • Medication – Please inform us beforehand if there is anything we should know in regards to your medications

CONDITIONS

5 hours for making reservations, research, changes to the itinerary etc. is included in the price of a custom tour. After 5 hours, ¥5,000 per hour will be added to the tour price.

​Group sizes are between 4 and 10. A 30% and 50% surcharge will be added to custom tours with 3 and 2 people respectively

LIABILITY & INSURANCE

Traveling with Active Travel Japan involves potentially dangerous activities and therefore Active Travel Japan assumes no liability for any loss, theft, damage, personal injury or death resulting from participation in its tours. Active Travel Japan requires all travelers to sign a waiver form prior to participation, in addition to being covered under a medical insurance and travel insurance policy to both minimize the financial and medical associated with high risk activities.
